UP tops Fortune's 'most admired' list for second time

Yesterday, Union Pacific Railroad announced that Fortune magazine ranked the Class I the “most admired company” among trucking, transportation and logistics firms for the second consecutive year. The magazine’s annual “World’s Most Admired” list also ranked Norfolk Southern Corp. No. 3, CSX Corp. No. 4, J.B. Hunt Transport Services No. 6 and Swift Transportation No. 9 in the category.

UP ranked first in seven of nine “reputation attributes” identified by Fortune: people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long-term investment, and quality of products and services.

“As we celebrate our 150th anniversary, this recognition by Fortune reinforces that providing great service results in outstanding value for our customers and shareholders,” said UP Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Young in a prepared statement.

Fortune’s research partner, Hay Group, surveyed 4,100 executives, directors and securities analysts to develop the rankings. The magazine’s Top 50 list includes Apple at No. 1, Berkshire Hathaway Inc. at No. 7, GE at no. 15, Caterpillar at No. 19, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. at No. 24, UPS at No. 29, Toyota Motor Co. at No. 33 and Honda Motor Co. at No. 50.
