Rail News: Passenger Rail

Long Island Rail Road implements online ticket service

MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) passengers now have the ability to purchase tickets from their home or office. The agency recently launched Metavante Corp.’s WebTicket, enabling riders to order passes via the Internet.

Metavante will develop and host the site, and manage ticket orders, payments and delivery. Passengers can purchase daily, weekly, 10-day and monthly tickets directly from the Web site. Tickets are mailed within 24 hours and delivered within three to five business days.

LIRR is offering passengers a 5 percent discount on one-way, round-trip and weekly tickets, and a 2 percent discount on monthly tickets purchased online. The agency expects to see a decrease in onboard ticket sales, which are more expensive to administer and divert train crew members from other areas of their jobs, according to a prepared statement.
