Yesterday, Toronto and York officials marked the completion of the first mile of twin tunnels for the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension.

The new tunnels represent one complete section of twin tunnels that will connect the future Sheppard West and Finch West stations, Transport Canada officials said in a prepared statement.

“We are one step closer to completing the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension, cutting commute times and easing traffic congestion in the greater Toronto area,” said Julian Fantino, associate minister of National Defense and a member of Parliament for Vaughan.

The project involves a 5.4-mile extension of the Toronto Transit Commission’s Yonge-University-Spadina subway line from Downsview Station to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre at Highway 7. The extension will feature six new stations and bring the line into the York region, which is the fastest growing part of the Toronto area, Transport Canada officials said.
