LaHood, Rogoff help launch Cincinnati streetcar construction

Last week, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Federal Transit Administrator Peter Rogoff were on hand to help kick off construction on a new 3.9-mile streetcar line in Cincinnati.

The project is designed to help revitalize the city’s downtown by connecting the riverfront and downtown employers with Findlay Market and the Over-the Rhine district, U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) officials said in a prepared statement.

The new line “fits perfectly with the city’s vision to transform the riverfront into a vibrant and desirable destination, while improving access to jobs and attractions like the Great American Ballpark and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center,” Rogoff said.

The USDOT is providing $39.9 million for the project, including $10.9 million in Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery III funds, $25 million from the Federal Transit Administration’s Urban Circulator grant program, and $4 million from a Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant. Local funding sources will cover the project’s remaining costs.
