Raleigh council OKs contract for new Union Station

The Raleigh City Council earlier this week approved a $200,157 contract with Clancy and Theys/Skanska Joint Venture to serve as construction manager at risk for the Union Station project in Raleigh, N.C.

The contract covers reconstruction services related to the project's new station phase, which will involve relocating passenger-rail service from the existing Amtrak station on Cabarrus Street to the Dillon Supply Co. warehouse at 510 West Martin St.

The warehouse building will be renovated to accommodate the passenger-rail facility. Associated site work and site improvements also are part of the work, city officials said.

Preconstruction services include constructability reviews, value engineering and estimating in support of the design work.

The city's existing Amtrak station is no longer adequate to serve an increasing number of rail passengers, Raleigh officials said. When completed, the new Union Station will serve Amtrak and accommodate connections to Capital Area Transit bus service, taxis and bicyclists.
