UP improves ranking on Newsweek's annual 'green' list

Union Pacific Railroad moved up to No. 81 among the top 500 U.S. businesses on Newsweek's 2016 "Green Rankings," the Class I announced yesterday.

Last year, UP came in at No. 121 on the list. On a global scale, the railroad ranked No. 143 this year vs. No. 187 last year, UP officials said in a press release.

Newsweek recently ranked publicly traded companies by market capitalization. The magazine scores companies against their global industry peers based on combined energy, greenhouse gas, water and waste productivity; green revenue score; sustainability pay link; sustainability board committee; and audited environmental metrics.

Other Class Is listed in the 2016 Green Rankings include CSX at No. 40, Norfolk Southern Corp. at No. 104, Kansas City Southern at No. 379 and BNSF Railway Co. parent Berkshire Hathaway Inc. at No. 388.

UP recently released its 2015 Building America Report, which details the company's sustainability accomplishments.
