CSXI rolls out free-time program, capacity management system to reduce terminal congestion



If CSX Intermodal trains arrive late in Little Ferry, N.J., it’s going to cost the company more than shippers’ confidence. There’ll be fewer equipment storage fees to collect.

Last week, CSXI launched a Performance-Based Free Time Program under which shippers receive free storage and per diem time if the company doesn’t meet an original estimated time of availability (OETA). CSXI is piloting the program on CSXU and North American Container System equipment moving from Chicago, Indianapolis and East St. Louis, Ill., to the Little Ferry terminal. The company plans to implement the program on additional lanes later this year.

If CSXI misses an OETA, a shipper will receive standard free time plus one day. Standard charges apply after performance-based free time expires.

The program will improve terminal throughput and help customers plan destination deliveries with “increased accuracy and confidence,” CSXI officials said in a prepared statement.

Meanwhile, CSXI continues to roll out another initiative aimed at improving terminal throughput and customer service. On Feb. 12, the company will implement a Capacity Management System at its Orlando and Tampa, Fla., terminals.

Designed to regulate empty equipment flow by customer and day of week, the Web-based system already has been implemented at terminals in Atlanta; Columbus, Ohio; Kearny, N.J.; and Nashville, Tenn. CSXI plans to roll out the system at all terminals later this year.
